Charles F. Vatterott, the developer and builder of most of the residential and commercial properties in St. Ann, started the community as a housing project for families of workers employed in nearby defense plants. It quickly grew into a permanent community, featuring moderately-priced homes and a strong community feel. St. Ann is named after Saint Ann, the mother of the Virgin Mary.

MetroBus and MetroLink connections are available, providing convenient travel into St. Louis and Lambert St. Louis International Airport. St. Charles Rock Road, a main artery in the area, runs through St. Ann as well.
